Meet Lyel – Founder of Car Confidence

Car Confidence - Created for all generations

Car Confidence was built from Lyel’s passion for cars and a desire to help others feel capable, informed, and in control behind the wheel.

With hands-on experience as an apprentice mechanic and a lifelong love of all things automotive, Lyel has spent years learning not just how cars work, but how to explain them in a way that actually makes sense. What started as helping friends and family understand their vehicles has grown into a purpose-driven business focused on education, confidence, and independence.

Car Confidence exists to bridge the gap between drivers and mechanics, removing the overwhelm, the confusion, and the fear that so many people feel when it comes to their cars. Through practical, easy-to-understand workshops, Lyel empowers everyday drivers with real knowledge they can use, whether it’s understanding warning signs, basic maintenance, or knowing when something isn’t right.

At its core, Car Confidence is about more than cars. It’s about giving people the tools to feel safe, make informed decisions, and avoid unnecessary costs, so they can drive with confidence.

Dad and Son
I wish I had done this years ago! The workshop explained everything in such a simple and practical way. I finally understand what all the warning lights mean and how to check my oil and tyre pressure. It was relaxed, supportive and actually really fun. Every driver should do this.

WHY THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT WORKSHOP
YOU WILL EVER ATTEND

Where the Idea Began

Most learner drivers spend considerable time developing the skills required to control a vehicle
safely and follow the road rules.

But what happens once they have their licence?

Who teaches them:

How to check their tyres?

Where to find the correct tyre pressure?

How to recognise unusual tread wear?

How to check basic fluid levels?

What dashboard warning lights mean?

What to do when a battery goes flat?

What equipment they should carry in their car?

How to decide whether a vehicle problem is urgent?

What questions to ask when speaking with a mechanic?

For many drivers, the answer is nobody.

These skills are often picked up from parents, partners, friends or mechanics, if they are learned at all.

Lyel saw an opportunity to make this practical knowledge easier to access.

Car Confidence was created to give everyday drivers a place where they could learn the basics properly, ask questions freely and develop skills before they found themselves dealing with a problem on the side of the road.

Turning a Passion for Cars Into Practical Education

Lyel’s interest in cars has been part of his life for many years.

That passion developed alongside practical mechanical experience and an understanding of
how everyday vehicle systems work.

But the purpose behind Car Confidence is not to demonstrate how much Lyel knows about cars.

It is to make that knowledge useful to other people.

The most valuable skill in a Car Confidence workshop may not be knowing the name of
every component under the bonnet.

It may be knowing:

Which things you should regularly check

Which warning signs you should not ignore

Which simple tasks you can safely carry out yourself

When you need professional help

What questions to ask a mechanic

How to prepare your vehicle before a long trip

What to do if something unexpected happens

That is the practical knowledge Lyel wants to make accessible to everyday drivers.

Turning a Passion for Cars into Practical Education

What Lyel Wants Every Driver to Know

You do not need to become a mechanic to understand your vehicle.

A relatively small amount of practical knowledge can make a significant difference to the
way you experience car ownership.

Drivers should feel comfortable understanding the basics of:

Tyre condition and tyre pressure

Basic vehicle fluids

Dashboard warning lights

Batteries and starting problems

Roadside preparation

Emergency equipment

Preventative maintenance

Vehicle safety checks

Repair urgency

Communicating with mechanics

Understanding these areas can help drivers recognise issues earlier, make more informed
decisions and feel better prepared when something unexpected happens.

Who is the founder of Car Confidence?

Lyel founded Car Confidence after recognising a common gap in traditional driver education.

Most drivers learn how to control a vehicle, obey the road rules and prepare for their licence test, but many are never taught the practical side of looking after the car itself.

Lyel’s lifelong interest in vehicles and practical mechanical experience gave him an understanding of many of the everyday car skills that other drivers may never have had an opportunity to learn.

Rather than keeping that knowledge within automotive circles, Lyel wanted to make it accessible to ordinary drivers.

Car Confidence was created as a friendly place where people could learn skills such as tyre checks, basic fluid inspections, dashboard warning lights, roadside preparation and preventative
maintenance without feeling intimidated.

Lyel’s approach is based on practical demonstration, patience and plain-English explanations.

The objective is not to turn participants into mechanics. It is to help them understand their vehicles well enough to carry out appropriate basic checks, recognise when something may be wrong and know
when professional help is needed.
